Search Engine Optimization is a strategy which is used to improve the rank of a website in the search engines so that it gets more exposure and gets noticed among the visitors who are using search engines for searching websites related to your business.
Search Engine Optimization is a tedious process and it takes some good amount of time to see the results. You need to maintain your patience and keep working consistently on your site. If you are wondering whether you need to optimize your website or not then you should optimize your website as more and more websites are being launched lately and so, you should optimize your website to beat other websites in your niche and also to increase your website’s popularity.
Search Engine Optimization can be broadly divided into two main types i.e. on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-Page optimization deals with internal factors like title tags, meta tags, keywords, sitemap, domain name and more whereas off-page optimization deals with external factors like backlinks, anchor text, relevancy and many more. In on-page optimization, you have the full control over the page whereas you don’t have the control over a page in off-page optimization.
Search engines like Google, Yahoo are always improving their algorithms to rank websites but there are certain basic factors to be considered while optimizing a website for search engines. Some of them are:
- Incoming Links – Incoming links play an important role in improving the search engine rankings. An incoming link means that there is some website on world wide web which is linking to your website. Search engines use links to find a website and give much weightage to links coming from developed and relevant websites.
- Keywords – Keywords are the words, phrases which you are targeting for your website. You should try to include the keywords in your content but you should not over-do them as search engines don’t like keyword stuffing.
- Title Tags – Title tags are used to provide information about a webpage to the search engines and also, to your visitors. Search engines display the title tag description on the result page whereas the visitors get the idea about the content available on the webpage by going through the title tag description.
- Sitemap – A sitemap is another important thing which plays an important role in optimizing a website to gain its visibility. A sitemap is basically a map of your site as it contains links to all the other pages of the website and so, it helps in better indexing of the website.
- Quality Content – Search engines love websites which provide valuable information to the end user and the websites which are frequently updated. But, you should not try to copy-paste content from other websites as search engines can find whether the content is duplicate or not and sites with duplicate content usually end up in a penalty by search engines.
- Search Engine Friendly URLs – Search engine prefer simple and understandable URLs instead of URLs having special characters like ?, &, = and more.
Search Engine Optimization is a tedious process which requires consistent efforts but if you optimize your website effectively then you are bound to see an increase in its popularity. Search Engine Optimization is a powerful way of improving the traffic and revenue but it can take some good amount of time to see the desirable results.
